The last 2 weeks I was on a whirlwind trip to Austin, TX for the Startup Weekend Global Organizers Summit and SXSW, then to Tokyo for the Startup Dating event and catching up with old friends. The details of my day-to-day happenings have been documented on my Storify story, so I won't bore you with the same info here. Instead, I'll write a little about the things I've learned at my first SXSW and what you can do to increase your Startup's exposure at the next SXSW (or other big events) on a shoestring budget.

I've kinda planned out my sessions on http://austin.lanyrd.com/nicwn If you're going to the same sessions, feel free to find me! You can ping me on twitter at http://twitter.com/nicwn

I've just arrived to Austin, TX for the Global Startup Weekend Organizers Summit yesterday, It has been a long week for me and starting today (Friday, March 9th) it's SXSW! If you're in town for SXSW as well, definitely give a shout out so we can have a meetup! Now to the main topic.

Very early on in our MakiBox funding period, we got contacted on Google+ from a Nils Hitze, we got talking about all the things we want to enable people to do by creating this $300 3D printer, and he became our #1 fan, spreading the MakiBox love to anyone he came across talking about 3D printers. He even initiated a bulk order for Germany to help more people get the MakiBox! I thought his passionate involvement is an interesting story so I

What a week this has been! Last weekend, the MakiBox was only about 80% funded, but we could see that it was getting about 1 support per hour so we knew that it'll most likely reach 100%. After it reached 100% at around 1am on Tuesday HK time though (Monday morning for US), TechCrunch picked up on it and we got on their front page! Our twitter stream exploded and supporters went

Hi to all the new readers from TechCrunch! Thanks for coming, hope you'll find what we do at Makible meaningful! As I mentioned in my blog post yesterday, we're extremely excited about the MakiBox getting successfully funded! The MakiBox is all about being affordable and easily accessible, we wanted to get 3-D printers into the hands of mainstream consumers because we believe that these are the people who will create things that are much more helpful for daily lives, which in turn will help make 3D printers a necessary household item!

One of the goals when we started Makible was we want to empower individual makers to create things that can help their local communities. Now that

Yesterday I wrote about how I failed at “walking the walk” of lean startup and customer development on my personal blog. I wrote about how passionate I am about the idea behind Makible - the brilliant business model I created with an open source project called “Open Hippel” - tons of online communities will be running “Open Hippel”, and when 1 idea out of the thousands of communities becomes really popular, it can be sourced to Makible for manufacturing and distribution! I built the system, and then…

      Nobody came.  orz

Fortunately, before Makible was created, I pitched

At this Tuesday’s HackJam meeting at Dim Sum Labs (Hong Kong’s local Hackerspace), Robert Lam, a local robot hobbyist, brought his 2 giant robots to give a demo and show off the power of these killing machines! ;-)

Robert, who humbly referrs to himself as “just a gadget guy who loves to play with smartphones, rc helicopters and robots,” decided to take the next step and create the Wahoo Robot project on Makible.

A Little Background on the MakiBox - Part 1 The Pain - MakiBox.com

At some point I'll have to explain the inspiration for doing the work on making the MakiBox design, so might as well do it now.

Mid 2011, a group of us from the HackJam meetup decided to buy a RepRap kit. It came in a few boxes with no concise instructions and literally was a box of parts. I actually stayed out of doing a lot of the assembly, just keeping an eye on the progress and helping the guys through parts that they had trouble with, and after a month of long weekly evening working sessions, we had a printer that *should* have worked.

Keep an eye on MakiBox.com for more detailed posts on the MakiBox as well as our updated site in the next few weeks.
